I couldn’t take it…about a foot of snow on the ground…32 degrees…I snapped at about 6pm and grabbed my crankin rod and headed down to the river boat launch and threw for the remaining 30 minutes of light…guides were iced up in 5 minutes and my fingers are still numb…I caught a stick, a rock, and the tarp that holds the gravel from washing away from the launch…lost one bait.
I would of laughed if you said you caught a bass. Everybody would be going out tomorrow fishin, well us northern folk that are still iced up, that is! You southern folk got it made this time of year, isn’t that right browny. I hate sufferin from bassin dt’s LOL
*L* Great story browny! I found a lake that actually has some open water on it today while I was out “scouting” the area lakes. It actually hit 52 degrees here in SW Iowa and the overnight is supposed to be 38 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be 48 (currently 43 degress at 8:07p as I type this!) before the sleet/rain/snow is supposed to come in the afternoon (sounds like a bite waiting to happen doesn’t it?) so I guess I’ll get up early and hit the open water and see if I can trick a bass into biting! I bought my license today so I am going to get my new KVD sig baitcaster out and going to throw some jerk baits and probably some worms. I can only hope I can catch a rock, chuck of ice, trash, frozen weed, something, I don’t care! I am anxious for tomorrow (hope I can sleep tonight!).
i know how u feal brownshelf i picked up my flipping stick and practice for about 1 hour in my hall way and then went outside for 30 min in 33” air temp and 8 inc of snow on the ground with wind blowing at about 10 - 15 mph and practices short casting a spinnerbait to objects on the ground the people driving by my house must think im nuts or something spring is in 19 days i cant Waite my favorite time of year to fish for trophy bass up hear by us in NY a trophy for us is LM 7 or 8 lbs bass SM 5 or 6 lbs
Wow! It was WAY warmer today here in SW Iowa than I remember being forecast! We actually hit a high of 66 degrees! This morning was absolutely beautiful when my brother-in-law stopped by. He was showing me the new Bass Pro ad, when I was able to talk him into taking our poles out. I, like browny, loved every minute of it despite the fact that I caught some grass, lost a Strike King shakey head football jig and 3x worm that got wedged in between some rocks, and created a birds nest that pretty much took my whole spool of line! *L* It was awesome day!!
When I returned home, my son was saddened that I took off without him and didn’t tell him I was going fishing. Therefore, I grabbed a different pole, grabbed his pole and we headed back out. I did much better (didn’t lose anything or get anymore birds nests) and my son ended his day when the very strong wind blew his 3x worm into a bush on his cast. It was starting to turn ugly with the clouds rolling in. When we left the lake the temp had dropped from the 63 when we arrived to 58. We came home, ate lunch, and then took a nap. When we woke up, it is now 34 degrees and raining. Looks like the 4-6” of snow will be coming tonight! Man, I just love March in Iowa!!
I am attaching a couple photos…one showing my son getting blown away from the wind as he fishes near an ice chunk and the other his is big bush he caught. Like browny, we didn’t catch a dang thing, but we had a blast. The boy, I think, enjoyed tromping around in the mud about as much as anything, but oh well.
Great pics New2Fishin.Great memories too! Looks like your boy went wading to LOL Well, at least you have open water and thanks for the blast of heat, suppose to hit us tomorrow.
reckon theres times when cabin fever just gets the best of you huh brownie??? good for you and your endurance…its your sanity that probably should be questioned…but then, being a bass fisherman, i tend to understand.
i made my first official trip to rayburn yesterday….me and several hundred others…. cant remember the last time i saw that many boats on the lake, and it not being the dog days of summer. might of been the good fog bank that had settled on the lake saturday morning…finally burned off around 10:30 or 11. thursdays local paper had the story of a guy that caught a 13.75 bucketmouth on T-bend (thats for you Venom), and the report just continued to get better…our lake waters are upper 50’s to right at 60 degrees right now…one of y’alls cold front is due in monday afternoon…pretty much knock that water temp around…dang it….but, at least the water aint hard round here….
i hooked up 3 different times…managed to ‘quick’ release two of ‘em before i got em to the boat, but the other one, was nice…probably went about 3 to 4.5 pounds…caught that one on a Swarming Hornet w/watermelon red needle worm trailer, right out in front of a buddy of mine who was crowding my little spot….right after that, he sure was interested in my lure of choice…LOL
Sounds like a blast snake! Us northern boys are gonna invade your place if you keep on with that warm weather you are talkin about LOL
Won’t be long now, warmer weather is comin.
yeah, bj, warmer weather is comin…..i used to always want to live where you actually had seasons….round here, its pretty much a touch of fall…then hunting season…a little touch of winter…then christmas…. a couple of good weeks of winter…. then spawn is on us…..right after that…summer sets in until we are begging for that week or two of fall….
you boys from up thar are more’n welcome down round here….we got plenty of lakes with soft water….and a premier little ol lake that holds the state record largemouth…ever heard of Lake Fork??? little of lake in northeast texas… not any big towns around it…but kelly jordan calls it his home lake…i got to fish it last summer…but the freakin lightning strikes kept me on shore for most of the 3 days i set aside for fishin…..maybe this year will give up another opportunity.
Iv went out the last two days, water temps in the high30s to low 40s,COLD. I fished pretty hard, for 5or6 yrs. both days. Iv had 3 bites,2 on redeye-shad,and 1 on a jig.But it was ALOT of FUN, i was glad to be out.
It hit 62 here in north central Illinois yesterday. I went out ice fishing in the afternoon and sat in shorts in the hut. A buddy of mine came up and said “WTF?” Talk about nuts. The girlfriend saw me when I came home and asked me if I went to the YMCA to play basketball. No hun, I was out fishing. That south wind was pretty warm yesterday. The springs on the lake I was fishing were kicking hard. I watched the water rise out of the hole twice about 3 inches. Pressure cracks galore. Its only a matter of time. I give it about 3 weeks the way the weather is looking. Wont be long now…
lol, 70 degrees here in Illinois sunday, still was 61 at 10 pm, forcasting 6-10” of snow between late monday night and Tuesday…....in Illinois if ya dont like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change
Hey Top 10, I just checked out the weather channel. Good luck with that storm tonight. Looks brutal! I wish it would take a more northern route, I havent been able to use my shovel in a couple of days. J/K….I want 90 degrees and high humidity. lol yeah right.
