I caught my first gar pike while throwing rattle traps saturday.
Over 3’. Didn’t have a nte and didn’t get cut up.

Their mouth is so crazy looking. I cught some bass but mentally checked out after cathing the pike.

Do you guys have gars down south. If not...google it up. They have a dolphin type nose full of teeth.

I got into a school of gar on Allatoona several years ago. I too was throwing a Rat-L-Trap. I caught three back to back. They were about two feet long. Miraculously, my line didn’t get cut. I also caught a two pound spot out of the same area. So much for the theory that bass and gar don’t co-habitate.

We have short-nose gar here on the miss. I have never caught one bass fishing, but some times you can see them resting on the surface and throw a weightless super fluke and they will crush it. Always use pliers with gar, if you don’t you will regret it.

Now c’mon let’s get this correct ......grin ....All us Northern Pike guys take exception.

The Gar is not related at all to the Pike.  Sometimes gar are called Garpike but that was a term that evolved from converstaion, not from any relation.
Gar are members of the Lepisosteus species...while Pike are in the Esox species. There is no connection between the two.
Pike are much more fierce while gar are very laid back.

Gar are cool to catch though. I used to get them down in Florida on Lake Toho sometimes on days when I’d use shiners.
