Hey guys, i will be fishing in the upcoming bassmaster weekend series tournament out of smallwood state park in a few weeks, and i was wondering what it is like there. I will be fishing as a co-angler and won’t have any time to fish before the tournamet, so i was just wondering what to expect.

I am not asking for your lures or any spots to fish, just the basics of the area.

Ex: baitfish, water color, primary cover, etc…

I fish the Potomac a few times a month. Last year did pretty good there, during this time I catch alot on Frogs, The last time I was there I was throwing around a tru tungsten mad maxx frog in rotten pumpkin (brown/black) frog and was doing well, I caught a limit literally to the right on smallwood boat ramp (giant grass bed) and theres a cove right before possum point where theres alot of fish stacked, theres alot of grass, wood and current at this cove. just time the tide right and you’ll be fine. A majority of the fish were caught on the frog, chigger craw black/flue flake, and try drop shotting on the big weedbed edges ( theres usually a ledge right on the edges of these weedbeds where the main chanel is, and theres alot of fish there, it’s deeper water, so give that a whirl

WOW thank you alot allstar! Do you catch any size near the bank flipping and throwing frogs, or do they mostly stay on the grassbeds?

Lunkerlander, thank you i appreciate it

Back in that cove I landed 6 lber and lost another one similar size, but there’s monsters in the grass and they WILL come up for the frog, Alot of tournys are won out of this cove. it’s clear water with submerged pilings which tons of fish just sit there. The cool part about these spots, they are so close together that you wont have to run and gun, which save you lots of time and you can fish wood, rock, grass all in a concentrated area. Possum point is pretty good too, we were getting a couple on a swim jig. Just keep it simple and you’ll do fine. If you want, pm me and when I get home i’ll get you a map of where these spots are.

Thanks for the offer, but it wouldn’t really do me any good since im the co-angler. Im only 16, and since i have never fished there before, i don’t think the boater would really listen to me anyway…

Im stuck to fishing where he wants to fish

True, I hear you on that, but alot of boaters will listen to the co angler if all else is failing, just hope he dosent ask you an hour before the tournament. Good luck and keep firing the frog dude, you’re bound to get em with it

He may ask you for suggestions so be prepared when he does. Knowing all you can never hurts.

Being broke is not all that bad. Lot worse things in life than being broke

how did your tourny go? i fished last weekend as a co and didnt do well at all, we spent all day out in the deep grass beds wich i think would have been a lot more productive and a really big storm front not been movin in, i really think with the front we should have been back in the creeks or up over the shallower grass beds, i think they would have moved shallower to feed before the storm but i never got asked my opinion so as a co angler i just kept my mouth shut and enjoyed the ride lol he had a game plan and as a co i have to appreciate that.

It went pretty good, thanks for asking.

My friend i went down with couldnt fish sadly because his linked angler couldnt make it and there were not enough boats to take out all of the co-anglers.
I came in 47th officially with 5.22lbs, but actually had about a 6.5lb limit in the boat at one time before i accidentally “culled” down lol. I kept a 1lber instead of a 2lb plus by accident.
We caught them good on crankbaits and a few on jigs and frogs but i couldnt get a big fish bite which is so vital down there. My boater caught a 5lbr and came in 20th.

Oh, and i had my first experience going 65mph over water and it was a BLAST!!! On our way back to weigh in, we got airbourne quite a few times going over 3ft plus waves lol. I had to pry my hand off of the handle when we docked haha.
