as long as it is grease and not oil, it will work… but hotsauce is the best

I personally use oil on the worm gear rather than grease.  Grease traps and holds dirt and other abrasives which would inevitably cause the worm gear and the pawl to wear down.

The reason you do not oil the worm gear is because when using the reel drops of water off the line will fall on it, and wash the oil off over time.. thus leaving your gear dry causing it to wear down. You need a nice thick grease on it, then change the grease out every year or so.

I use hot sauce oil, which forms a molecular bond to the metal.  I also add a fresh drop or 2 after each outing.  I’m just following the manual that came with my Abu’s….says to oil the worm gear.  I may try putting a little hot sauce grease to them though.

Hmm, odd. I’ve never heard of a manual saying to oil it.. does it also say to put sand in your bearings to polish them? LOL!

Stacy King put oil on the worm gear in his little reel maintenance segment on The Bass Pros.
