Went to the gin clear lake after work, no action till the sun started going down and then shadows started to cover the water. threw chatterbait, spinnerbait, cordell spot, and a jitterbug with no bites even though the lake was getting active. kept throwing and throwing and nothing. getting dark and didn’t want to get locked in so i decided to leave. as i was leaving i was walking past this 1 bay i have never caught anything in but decided to throw a couple more anyway. threw a white, chartreuse chatterbait and on the first cast caught this 2 lber. Caught him with the main hook and the trailer, he wasn’t getting off even though he buried in the weeds, had to winch him in. nice fish, healthy and strong. threw a few more times and came home so it wasn’t a total waste, just can’t catch anything there unless it is low light.
nice healthy looking fish, its got pretty color. looks like the leaves are changing there….they are just starting over here. im headed up to try and do some trout fishing in the mountains on saterday so i can see some color on the leaves.
going back friday, (i’m off work friday and next monday, so i got a 4 dayer), with new tactics, dropshot, tube, swimbait, maybe a crank or zulu rig. all my reels need respooled so i will be doing that today after work and i am going to downsize my line and use fluoro leaders. i want to fish this little pond all the time and not just during low light conditions, problem is they lock it up when it starts to get dark so i can only fish it on cloudy, rainy days. man the water is so clear, only color in the water is from the bottom or the weeds.
Weird every fish i have caught here has been 2 lbs or better, never any dinks, figured out why. watching a guy across the pond fishing with minnows. anybody who brings a 5 gallon bucket with them is going to keep everything they catch. small bass are hungry and inexperienced and get caught first and harvested. that’s why there aren’t many bass in this pond, they are illegally taken out. People fish here because the rangers never come down to check licenses or creels. frickin sad. If the population was higher and more competition for the bass amongst themselves for food, it might be a little easier to catch more.
If anybody has any other suggestions on how to fish this place during sunny days, i’m open for suggestions. remember i’m fishing from the bank in gin clear tap water.
I was thinking about you the other day when a friend of mine was talking about fishing a super clear lake. He said he had some 5” flukes made custom, jet black and they smoked the fish on them fishing them over the weeds. Makes sense, I found the same idea to be true ice fishing last year.. when the water got clear the darker baits with no flake did the best.
yes, i didn’t notice at first but she’s starting to get a belly on her and might be a little heavier than 2 lbs.
I will try the flukes, i have some black ones. the bass only seem to come shallow during low light and i can’t cast out to where they are hunkered down in the weeds. at the deepest point the weeds are only about a foot long and of course as it gets shallower the weeds get longer. a weightless fluke going through the weeds might be good.
anything over the weeds so far is a big zero until it’s low light conditions. i’m going to try the dropshot and a texas rigged tube and the fluke. supposed to be some wind tomorrow which will help. Thanks guys.
I’ve seen bass hide in weeds with less than 6” of water, they could be right up on the bank hidden and you would never notice
i know but on this pond the first 5 feet from the bank is rock and it’s bare, i see bluegill and bass minnows swimming, but sadly not very many, then the next 5 feet is a tangled up mess of different weeds and i have seen bass go in and out of that stuff, past that it gets deeper and it’s mostly hydrilla all the way to the deepest part but it doesn’t grow all the way to the top so i can run baits over the top of it.
That really is a nice looking bass. I know that you fish the weeds and the bobber fishemen don’t. That pattern seems to be working great for you. You coud try a drop shot. They prolly haven’t seen too many of those. I’ve seen KVD fish a jerk bait with 10lb FC in clear water. He was fishing it fast. Do you need to go down on lure size?

I’m going to use a dropshot today. with the warm weather, all sun, no clouds and no wind, the water has warmed back up and the weeds have atarted to come back full force. a jerkbait is a good idea, i’ve decided against the tube, it’ll just sink down in the weeds. i’m trying to establish a fall pattern and we are back to summer. i’m looking at some shallow cranks too. we’ll see. i got about 10 different baits tied on so i have to choose what to take. thanks for your suggestion.
i know, i just don’t like fishing slow and dragging baits on the bottom or through the weeds, but i am going to have to, to be able to catch fish at this pond, when it’s cloudy i can fish fast

I actually enjoy crawling baits along the bottom or over rocks. When fishing 3 days during club tournaments and making thousands of casts, it’s a welcome rest to my arms and wrists. lol
