How does everyone like the KVD 1.0, 1.5 and 2.5 shallow cranks?

I’m not a proficient crankbait fisherman but I did catch more on cranks this year than usual.  Week before last I caught my personal best for this year at 5 lbs on a KVD 1.5 square bill shallow diver in sexy shad color.

Good to hear and congrats on your PB. I’m going to give my silent 1.0’s a try friday.

got my KVD 1.0’s last night, god they are small. what do you do throw them on spinning gear? i think i’m going to try that and see how it goes. i want to use light line anyway in the clear water pond. They look good, we’ll see how they fish.

I picked up some 1.0’s last week at BPS.  They are kind of small, but not quite as small as what I imagined.  I am going to throw them on my medium glass cranking rod. That setup should work perfectly.

My biggest worry is that my wife (when I’m dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.

i went out last friday and threw a bluegill colored one for a while, i had an Ugly stick light, with 12 lb Yozuri hybrid on. it casts ok but i would be happier with about 20 or 30 feet more cast.

i don’t have a glass crankin rod and don’t plan on buying one because i don’t use cranks much. it did ok on the spinning tackle. i threw it for about 45 minutes in the clear pond until the wind blew me off the bank. so no joy on the KVD 1.0. they were still running deeper than i like. about halfway back i would start to get into the weeds and had to clean the bait off every cast.

hopefully i’ll be catching them next spring. i am going to buy some Mann’s 1-Minus cranks to throw next year also. i need something that runs real shallow over the tops of the weeds until they mat up.

Congrats on the Personal best VTfan. I have all three sizes of the KVD square bill. I picked up the 1.0 a couple weeks ago, and I’ve caught a couple bass on it. I’ve caught more fish on the 1.5 than the other two, so that’s the one I fish with the most. Just like JakeC, my favorite color is Bluegill.

Hope you catch your biggest bass ever on your next fishing trip.

If the KVD 1.0’s don’t work for what you need, you can sent them to me! grin

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

No problem, you can have them for free with $50 shipping and handling

Honestly, you don’t have to have a fiberglass for crankbaits these days.  Graphite rods have came a long way over the years and are able to provide the softer flex needed for fishing crankbaits without risking ‘hook rip-out’ or setting the hook too soon.  I fish with 3 different crankbait rods; a 7’ All Star Medium/moderate (graphite), 7’ Loomis GL2 Med-Heavy/moderate (graphite) and a 7’ Powell Max Med-Heavy/mod-fast (glass).
I only use the Powell glass rod for deep cranking DD22’s and Bomber FF shads.  The 2 graphite rods cover shallow and medium depths.  I couldn’t imagine trading in my graphite crank rods for glass.  In fact, a heavier/shorter rod is what you want to be using for fishing square/coffin bill cb’s around cover.

i don’t have the money for those rods but i do have some whippy graphite much cheaper rods. i don’t know how well they handle fighting a fish on a crank because i have never hooked one on a crank. because i seldom throw a crank but that is going to change.

I have my glass rods because I got a GREAT deal on them, and they weren’t top of the line to begin with.  I agree there are some good graphite cranking rods.  I usually go middle of the road.

Next time your at BPS play with one of the KVD cranking rods, it will give you a feel for what a good cranking rod feels like.  Maybe you have one already that is very close to the action.

I can afford very little of tackle that has KVD’s name on it. especially rods and reels. i don’t even look at them. I have a couple of graphite rods already that should do good with cranks. I can always buy an ugly stick if need be.

17-20 lb mono or flourocabon will keep any of the cb’s at 2-3’. especially fishing them with a 5:1 gear ratio with a 7+ft rod held high in the air.
