Is an Abu Black Maxx worth having? i got a cheap rod with no reel for it and didn’t want to spend a lot of money. Hate having rods laying around with nothing to put on it. Thanks guys.
I’ve heard it’s a decent entry level type reel, although I’d consider spending a bit more & getting an Orra SX. You can get one of those off Amazon right now for $80 with $10 off & they’re much closer to the Revo series than the Max reels from everything I’ve read. If you’re paying full price for a Black Max, I think it’d be well worth the extra $20 to upgrade to the Orra.
If it’s anything like the SilverMax it’s a good reel for the money. I’ve got a SilverMax and it cast and reels like a dream. I can’t afford more than about $65 for a reel on my budget.

Its actually the same as the silver max, just one or two less bearings. Guts and everything is the same though.
thanks for the tip BBK, i went to FFO and ordered a Silver Maxx. If it turns out to be good i might go back and buy another one or 2 and maybe a Black Maxx. They just say reconditioned but don’t tell you what they actually do. Do they change the bearings? i figured for 39 bucks with shipping included it was worth the chance. When i get it i’m going to tear it down and clean and oil it if needed.
Only bad thing is now i need some rods.
Does it ever end? I started out 2 years ago just wanting a couple of spinning rods and a few baits. now i got about 15 different outfits and more lures and line than i will ever use.
I got a trash bag busting at the seems full of line and 2 trash bags full of lures and terminal tackle. After this years holiday sales coming up, i got to slow down.
I buy a lot of reconditioned reels from FFO. They take the reels that are returned to the mfg for various reasons and put new guts in them then re-sell them cheap as hell. They might have a couple scratches on the outside, but the insides are pretty much a brand new reel. I havent had any problems with the ones I’ve bought.
What are looking for? - I’m getting ready to list a couple on eBay:
Quantum Tour Edition HSX54 7ft MH casting rod
Quantum Tour Edition HSX54 6ft6in M spinning rod
These are used but in great shape - I have upgraded all my rods to Tour Edition PTs
Those are way to high tech for me flyman, i buy the $40 Cabelas or BPS specials, thanks anyway. Ill buy 3 or 4 Cabelas Pro guide rods at a time and stockpile them, when i break one i got a couple as spares. i’m out of spares now, time to order a few more.

That’s great, just what i wanted to hear, thanks for the info on FFO. I like the fact they got a 90 day warranty, lot of places won’t do that.

These are not high end rods. They retailed for $80 when they were new. Drop me a PM if you would interested - I don’t have a set price for ‘em and I’m willing to haggle.
