The most memorable lost fish I remember happened to Heather in our 1st year of marriage back in 1985. She was about 4 months pregnant with our 1st daughter and were fishing out of a boat in Lake Ashtabula in North Dakota. We were having a ball catching perch and bullhead. Heather was using a cheap Zebco rod with a Zebco 33 reel. All of sudden her rod just doubled over. she was trying to reel and couldn’t do anything. she finally got right under the boat and just leaned back. One of the biggest northern pike I’ve ever seen rolled on the surface. The other guy in the boat with us and I were tripping over each other trying to get to the net. I yelled for Heather to push the button (on the reel) when the line just snapped.

Heather never even saw the fish - we talk about that beast almost everytime we’re out.

Oh, I forgot the most memorable bass(I know, can’t be my most memorable when I forgot it tongue laugh ) that got away, but I got him a couple days later. I was fishing my sister’s little farm pond & burning a lipless right along the edge of the little island it has & I felt a bite & set the hook. It took off charging right for the dock(which has metal poles holding it in place) & I started speed reeling dropping my tip horsing it trying my hardest to keep it away from that dock, but I just couldn’t get it stopped before it got wrapped up in the poles. I tried finessing it out of there & I wasn’t gonna go in after it, considering how nasty the water was around that dock, but it eventually broke off. 2 days later throwing a 3/16ths RE spinnerbait I got a big bite right at that same spot & I had no problem keeping it away from the dock this time. I thought the fish had a weird growth on the side of it’s face, but it was my lipless crankbait I lost on that fish that wrapped me around the dock. Both trebles were stuck in the side of his head pretty good. She was a little under 4lbs, but she only got away for 2 days.

The most memorable fish that I lost, I didn’t even set the hook on.  Last summer I was fishing in a local Bass tournament with my almost 7 year old son (at that time).  He was sitting on the seat on the rear deck of the boat.  We were working our way around a point where we frequently catch fish.  We needed something, getting later and no fish in the livewell.  Then he said Daddy I think I got one, before I could get back to him he said no I think I’m just stuck.  I said OK, and took the rod up to the front, I got to get it unstuck.  I get the front of the boat over the lure and begin to reel down to it.  About that time it started to move.  Now I realize that there is a fish on the other end.  So I begin to fight the fish (natural instincts) with my son’s spinning reel spooled with 8 lb mono on a 6’6” rod.  Its is good equipment, I wouldn’t let them fish with something that I wouldn’t use myself.  So anyway, I am beginning to make progress, this is a good fish.  I’m just starting to get the fish close to the boat when the line breaks.  Based upon the fish that are in this lake, it was probably either a bass or a walleye, but I’m leaning more towards the bass.  I’m now kicking myself for loosing that one, I’m thinking I put too much pressure on the line.  My son is asking me all the usual questions like, what happened, what was it, etc.  We fish the rest of the day and didn’t put a single fish in the livewell.

The best part of the story comes after the weigh-in.  We are standing there listening to some of the guys tell how they did and what the where using.  One of the guys asks, how we did.  I say not very good, but had a great time fishing a tournament with my oldest son.  I start to tell them the lost fish story when my son says “I even lost my favorite chatterbait, when Daddy broke my line.”  One of the older guys said, “Oh, you did?  “Did you have fun?”  My son says yes.  The gentleman then says to my son, “Let’s go dig through my stuff I’m sure I have one that is like the one you lost.”  After many thank-you’s we headed home.  Before my son could try and tell too many stories.

My son got a new chatterbait, I have a story that I will never forget.  To this day, I still couldn’t tell you who that gentleman was, but that was one of the nicest things that I have seen.  If by any chance that you happen to read this, Thank-you again!!!!!

My biggest worry is that my wife (when I’m dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.

Thats a great story. I ran into kid fishing out of a row boat a couple summers ago. I asked how he was doing and he said he couldnt catch any bass. I was catching them pretty good and he seen me land a few. He asked what I ws using and how I was using it, I trolled up to his boat and showed him the tube jig I was using. He got his box out and said he didnt have anything like that. I asked how he did in school he said he was on the honor roll all year. I told him that was great and gave him a few heads and some extra tubes I had. I showed him how to rig it up and told him to cast it out let it sink and hop it back. He tied the jig on cast it out and retrieved it back in. I told him good luck and moved down the line a little bit but I could still see him. About 2 min later I heard him screaming and hollering, I looked over and seen him bring a little bass in. I laughed and kept fishing. Things like this make me feel good.

That’s really cool of you Stickum.  That kid will remember that forever.  Hopefully, if and when he gets in the same position, he will pass on the kindness that you shared with him.
