So are pike considered a trash fish? Do people eat them?
I don’t eat’em they get tossed back down the hole…................they are just really fun to catch!!
We were using 6in shiners on our secret cove that freezes over quickly on the Hudson River. The main river is completely open but the cove has a good 6in of ice. I dont think i’ll be going this weekend it’s friggen 50 deg here today, and people say there is no global warming going on. I guess i’ll have to go wabbit huntin or somethin.
all i know is that in my lifetime the weather pattern has changed dramatically. on the whole winters are much milder, with a lot less snow now than they were 50 years ago. around 50 here today also. i can’t remember the last day of january being this warm and i’ve lived in a cold climate all my life.

I eat them. Out of cold water they taste just like walleye. Once the water temp hits 70 or so I start throwing them back.
I got out once this year, last friday. Ice is about 2” now and will be gone tomorrow.
Last friday I hit up a new pond in the county park, I had heard there were some nice fish in there but never believed it. I was wrong, bluegill over 10” and more 12-15” bass than you could handle. I started out fishing for gills, then the bass fisherman in me took over. I put on the smallest jigging rap and started catching bass, man that is FUN! I’ve never had a spot where I could target bass though the ice before, and man are they a fight on 1-2lb line. Wish I could have made it back, but its on the list come spring.

Wow 10” gills would give you a heck of a fight on light tackle, that had to be fun.

Never ate any, i’ve only caught one in my life and it was to small to keep, about an 18”. i have heard it is excellent tasting if you clean it right.
I remember in the late 80’s when Lake Erie used to freeze over every year. they had planes that would fly you out on the water for ice fishing. people used to hook up their ice fishing huts to the back of their trucks and pull it out and leave it all winter. one year the ice thawed early and a guy, his truck and hut broke off the main ice and was floating free. they saved him but not his truck or hut
Ha we do that all the time for duck hunting. Ive busted for fishing once, and that was because the bay where the launch is was froze. Busted our way out to the main river.
