i’ve got a couple of the regular ones and some of the lite’s. there is a definite difference in the weight, with the lites being way lighter. i guess i’m using some really cheap rods because i can’t tell much difference of weight in the lite’s as compared to my other graphite rods. I’ve got a couple of the regular baitcasters and those things are like fishing with rebar.
With as many rod tips I broke a couple years ago, I should go to the ugly sticks. I never had one.
They are fairly cheap, even the lites, not the tiger lites, the regular lites. a MH ugly stik lite will be a lot whippier than probably any of your other mh rods. i’m going to try the baitcaster, 7’ MH, i just ordered with cranks and see how it does. I think the lites run $39.99. if i like it i’m going to order a couple more. most my rods are too stiff for the cranks. use those for frogs and worming/jigging and big spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.
If I pick up a cheap Ambassadeur to use for catfsihing, an Ugly Stick is gonna be high on my purchase list. Toughness will be top priority with a catfish rod & they don’t get a whole lot tougher than an Ugly Stick.
just came back from BPS after picking up some trailer hooks and my 2 new ugly stiks. the Baitcaster is an Ugly Stik lite and it is heavier than some of the rods i have but weigh the same as some other. i don’t think it is too heavy. it is a 7’ mh mfast and is stiffer than i thought it would be. in fact it is stiffer with more backbone than some of my 100% graphite baitcasters. i was pleasantly suprised. haven’t decided yet what i’m going to use it for.
The spinning rod is a regular Ugly Stik 7’ M and whippy as a limp noodle which is what i wanted to cast the smaller shallow cranks, small spinner baits and maybe even 3/8 oz and down chatterbaits. maybe even some weightless plastics and suspending jerkbaits
I still use my Ugly Stiks once in a while. in fact i just ordered a couple. Don’t have to worry about snapping the tips off of them.
Will the 7’ MH Ugly Stik Lite be ok as a crankbait rod?
It’s a composite rod and not as thick and heavy as the older types.
How many guys still use theirs?
Feel free to tell any story about your Ugly Stiks.
Never owned one but recommend a 7’ m action rod to a buddy on a budget as a nylon monofilament budget crankbait rod. I like cherry woods myself as a braided budget cranking rod but the superior power and sensitivity of the ugly stick won out for him as he only fishes with nylon mono. FYI the “inshore select” ugly sticks come in 7’6’’ M and MH fast IM6 backed, glass tipped split grip and would, as far as I can tell, make a great budget deep diving crankin rod for freshwater bass. Good cranking rods for nylon. A bit too heavy for braid IMO.
i went to the Shakespeare website, i didn’t know they had all those different types of ugly stiks, BPS and Cabelas don’t sell them. i’ll find a site that sells the other and check them out at a later date. right now i got all the rods i need.

BPS has the inshore select rods for sale online under the saltwater fishing department. In store? I doubt it unless your BPS is located near the coast.
*Correction*: only available in medium and medium light. No medium heavy. BPS only carries the 7’ but 7’6’’ are available else were as I KNOW I have seen 7’6’’ models of these rods before. They look to be budget salt poping rods and saltwater poping rods make good freshwater deep diving cranking rods from what I hear. From what I understand it was the popularity of the saltwater poping rods in 7’6’’ length used as DD cranking rods that lead to the popularity of the greater-than-7’ cranking rods we see today.
I only have one rod that is not an Ugly Stik and that is a Berkely Lighting Rod that came as part of a combo I bought last year. All my other rods are Ugly Stiks. I’ve used them for over 30 yrs and the only one I’ve ever broke was a two piece spinning rod that broke at the joint last year when I set the hook on a spawning bass. No more two piece rods for me. The 6’6” medium action bait rod is a bit heavy for me so I’m going to go with a Ugly Stik Lite. JMHO
i have a couple of ugly stik lite spinning rods and used them a lot last year, the only thing i don’t like is the tip is a little to limp, i would like it just a tad stiffer. no puns please i know what you are thinking. I just epoxied all my 2 piece rods together this weekend, because all the rods i have broken lately is 2 piece rods at the joint plus they were starting to loosen up and turn on me so the guides don’t line up. so now they can’t turn.

I have heard form die-hard ugly stick guys that they do not like the lite versions rods guides as they are easily damaged by braided line. I don’t know how much I buy into the braided line and guide cutting hype as I have fished braid (fireline) for years and often on low-price rods. Can you confirm or deny this? I’d trust your opinion over the “purists” when it comes to this. Yes, like anything, there are ugly stik purists out there.
