Are any of you fella’s a business owner? Im talking with some tackle companies and contemplating a web-based business. Going to mostly target eBay, but I know I have to have a store front and physical address for some companies to accept me as a dealer.
SO does anyone know about Gov. funding or zoning laws?

I would hold off on any worries about zoning..that will be an issue when you grow.  What State?  I would look into becoming a LLC doesn’t cost more than 500bucks

Mfg or retail sales? You just have to register with the IRS and state as a retail business and get a business number (IRS gives it to you when you register). Your wholesale companies will ask you for your business tax #, and that is all you need. If you are going to mfg jigs or whatever and sell them, well that is a whole new ball game.

Take a look at the SBA for funding and help with that part.

Im in Indiana and was hoping to use my detatched garage as a “store front”. What im looking to do is deal mostly in rods and reels to start off with. Something my wife and I could handle from home while still keeping our day-jobs.
I plan on going to our court house and a book-keeper/tax office to see what I need before hand.
I figured there could be some sort of Gov assistance out there to cut down on the out of pocket expenses. Is the SBA where I need to look for that BBK?

Along with my main job, I own and run a photography business.  I started it as something to run in retirement and it has taken off beyond belief.
The key to starting any business is a PLAN !  Write the plan down and include forecasts, profitability and capital plans.  Too many folks “just wing it” and are in trouble right away.  For a home based business like you are talking, most communities allow work from home businesses as long as your customers do not come there on a regular basis to deliver or pick up merchandise.  Contact your local City Hall for more info. It’s always best if you are up front with them and seek assistance. .

Unless you live in a very rural area, most communities do NOT allow garages to be used as retail space.  Zoning laws forbid this as well. If all you plan on doing is shipping from the garage, that’s different. But if folks will come by and make purchases, you will have issues.  GOOD LUCK !

Do all the leg work about how and where you are going to set up and what you plan to do before you go to the SBA. If they deem it a legitimately viable business, your chances are good for getting a loan through them.

have all your i’s dotted and t’s crossed before you consult SBA. A business plan like what AAav8or talked about is a good start. put it in writing and try to stick to it to show SBA you are serious and you can make your business work. Some SBA’s want like a presentation so prepare one. CYA!!!!
