i am forcing myself to fish spinnerbaits/chatterbaits like KVD saya in his video and on BPS outdoor world. with jeks and pauses as opposed to just reeling it in. it paid off yesterday, i wasn’t getting bit with anything. threw the spinnerbait and put a jerk or 2 on it and got bit. i am convinced it was my presentation and not the bait that caught that fish. I am also making multiple casts in places i think is holding fish, which i never used to do. started doing that late last year.
I’d really second this. One of my baits that I’ve wanted to get more confidence with this season is the spinnerbait. So I’ve taken to mixing up the retrieve and throwing some pauses, twitches, shakes, and jerks to make the bait more erratic. Remember that bass are opportunistic predators, and will go for something that looks wounded. I’m also a new convert to using a trailer hook. Had a few short strikes last week (the only strikes on some high sky bluebird days), changed things up with some new painted blade spinnerbaits with trailer hooks and caught 3 bass in 2 hours yesterday afternoon (one of them a 6lb beauty that hit it like a ton of bricks). All of them were well hooked and one I wouldn’t have gotten without the trailer.
Finally, match the skirt to the local forage. There are certainly times when that neon red spinnerbait will work, but I’m finding that keeping them in tune with what the bass are used to, has more consistency, especially in the clear lakes and ponds I fish here in Indiana.
