Due to the limited amount of time that I have had to go fishing this time home, I figured I had better jump on every opportunity I get. So I went fishing today with one of my nephews. The high was 47. Ok, but I can deal with cold. The wind was 20 to 30 and the white caps were 2’ tall. That made the high of 47 a little less bearable. But Lake Jordan has plenty of coves on it and I figured I could get back in some coves, stay out of the wind, and might get a bite or two. Well, I figured wrong. Every time I would get on one side of the cove to get out of the wind, it would come from the other direction. The chop was absolutely unbearable. But I must say the the Z-9 handled it very well. My last boat, a Procraft, didn’t do well with choppy water at all.
But that’s not the bad part. During one trip down the lake, while bouncing across the chop, I didn’t realize three of my rods jumping off the boat. I had three spinning rods fastened on the front deck with those rubber straps. When I got to my next location, they weren’t there. Uuuhhhggg!! Also, when we started out across the lake the first time, I had on a hat and a coat with a hood. Shortly after getting up to speed, the hood of the coat blew up, almost losing my hat. I stopped to get everything situated again only to realize I had lost my Costa sunglasses in the process.
It was a very expensive fishing trip and I didn’t even catch a fish. Bah humbug!
Ouch. Thats a tough break DD. I rigged up a double tie-down on my front deck for rough water. Nothing you can do about the glasses though. I’ve lost a pair of those myself.
Shake it off DD, it’s better than a kick in the sack. we all have days like that as you know, ur luck is running bad right now but if that is as bad as it gets then thank your lucky stars and wait for the good times to roll.

Yeah, I’m definitely going to add the second strap now. But at least it was the spinning rods, and not any of my baitcasters. That would have made me absolutely sick.

There is a lot of things better then a kick in the sack!! LOL!! But you’re right and I am looking forward to the next time I’m home. I’ll get home March 14th and fishing should be really good then.

Wow, that is unfortunate. I’ve been in some nasty stuff and never had rods go overboard when tied down with straps. Weird. It’s like karma was poring salt into the wound. I’m glad to see your boat can handle the big stuff. For we rec guys, a hull’s ability to handle big waves is important.
I feel your pain. High winds suck. I’ve tried running form them in the past and have had piss poor results in coves either due to still getting hammered by the wind magically changing direction to follow me, or simply getting blown off fish and forced to fish where fish are not present, or present but not active.
Rule #1 for me is never to hide from the wind and/or pleasure boater wakes.
This year an electronic deploy/stow anchor is about to become my new best friend when fishing in the wind.

If you have any idea where the rods fell off, go back there and dredge for them, you never know, you may snag one. we all seem to snag everything else, why not a few rods? Hang in there buddy, we are rooting for you!

I’d probably never be able to find them if I tried. The lake goes to at least 90’ or more out at the center and I traveled about a mile during that trip and I have no idea where they decided to leave the boat. But I’m not that upset about losing the spinning gear. I’ve gotten to where I don’t like using them because of the inherent problems with spinning gear. The only reason I had them on the deck was for my nephew to use them. He’s right handed and all of my gear is lefty. I do have one right handed baitcaster setup for guests that don’t have their own gear but I had them out in case he wanted to use more than I set up.
The only problem I have now is: 1) telling my wife that I lost three spinning rods and reels, and 2) convincing her to let me replace them with baitcaster set ups!
I need to start telling her what I want now and let that sink in while I’m at work this time. Then let my plan go to work. If it works out as planned, she’ll get them for me as a “Valentine’s Gift” while I’m at work and that way she’ll think it was her idea as a gift for me and she’ll feel that she did something special for me. Sweet plan, huh?
