Ok, Im not a huge fan of Ike on the water although he is a decent guy, but his saying to Never Give Up is something everyone should follow. The last few days here we have had fronts go thru, several days of clouds, north winds that sometimes were near 50 mph, never have gotten past a winter pattern anyway has made it tough. I have been walking the banks of this little lake cause its close to home and I can go every night. The bite has not been good since the early part of winter. I have gone 4 days in a row and its been slow, so last night I go, its in low 40’s outside, high winds, raining and had just dropped 25 degrees in a few hours, I start throwing a senko type bait with the same result as the whole last week, about 1 bite in 2 hours and those bites wouldnt hold on. Normally a person says the fish just arent biting and heads home, thats what I would have done..But I started thinking about thse quotes…KVD, Its all about the Attitude and IKE, Never Give Up. Im really type A and I hate to admit defeat or lose. As much as im in expreienced at drop shotting, I rigged up a drop shut, with the same bait as I had been trying to Texas rig…Boom, In the next hour and a half I caught approx 20 fish that will all go from 2 lbs to 3 lbs, This has worked well for 2 days now.

My point is, i could have used my excuse of…They arent biting, when actually they were, I just had to have it off the bottom and a slower presentation. Instead of going home defeated, I feel like I beat the odds when all others at the lake were getting whopped. Dont give up, play with things you dont normally fish, try new things, use your instincts…You can catch fish on days where you would normally just leave.

way to go top. must be nice to fish in a lake that has 20 fish.
i woke up with a chest cold, not feeling well but it was sunny and 33 degrees out with a 25 mile north wind and went fishing for the first time this year. water temp has got to be in the mid 30’s at best. went to the lake that has the most fish in it but it is an elevated lake and the wind was in my face just howling. wind chill was in the 20’s. first 2 casts of the year were backlashes and the second one i had to cut the line and hand land my lure. retied and was throwing a small red diamond shad and no luck. my hands were so cold i couldn’t hold the reel very well. left there for another pond that was a little more protected from the wind. no luck there either. at this point with snot running out of my nose like a leaky faucet and coughing up a lung every 10 minutes i decided to go home. all about the attitude and never give up never crossed my mind. blowing my noise and getting some feeling back in my hands was. maybe i should have stuck it out but i just didn’t have the will. sorry guys.

That’s a really cool post.  Thanks for sharing.  Hopefully that will inspire some guys out there, like me, to stick with it when all hope seems lost.

Nice adjustment,  some times presenting the same bait in a different way can ignite the bite.

Nice change - going away from your strengths but giving the fish what they wanted.  Sometimes we say “they are not biting” when we just dont want to admit we didn’t find what they did want.

They were not biting…THAT - but they were biting something else or what we had on but fished in a different manner

Plus you have another fall back pattern in case your primary pattern(s) don’t work

That and you can’t beat early season fish!

A quote I think about when the going gets tough—“You gotta be smarter than the fish! If you ain’t smarter than the fish, you’re in for a loooong day.”

I really don’t let myself think they are not biting…I always have the attitude that I didn’t figure it out.  When I do get those times that they seem to bite anything I go ahead and try to catch some on a techinque in not good at in hopes that I will gain me some confidence in

i always think my next cast could land a monster. i try not to over think it. re-evaluate the conditions you have going on. don’t be afraid to try something new. BH
