Californians Gutierrez, Monroe Set Fast Pace On Day 1, Clear Lake

Greg Gutierrez, one of the smallest anglers on the Bassmaster Elite Series, caught the biggest bag today at Clear Lake. The 5-foot-3 full-time firefighter hauled in 32-13 to take the day-1 lead in what could become a record-breaking tournament as thousands of big fish have moved into the shallows and appear poised to lock onto spawning beds.
He has a 4-ounce lead over fellow Californian Ish Monroe, who’s 2nd with 32-09. He predicted 9 days ago that Preston Clark’s 4-day record of 115-15 would be broken at this event.
