The keys to fantasy fishing

Every Bassmaster Elite Series angler has been scrambling to prepare for next week’s season opener at Lake Martin. It’s been crazy the past few weeks as I round up gear, get stocked with the baits I’ll need and finalize arrangements as we set off into a new year. I’ve never been more excited to get back on the water with a new rig, new equipment, get into a warmer climate and in the midst of the competition that drives me.  It’s that time of year when tournament followers are making preseason predictions as excitement for Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing builds. Even my family members …

Cost saving tips for keeping line fresh

Now is the time to think about respooling with fresh line. It’s also a good time to start shopping line prices at boat shows and tackle dealer spring specials. For example, Bass Pro Shops offers sales on different types of lines during its upcoming Spring Fishing Classic. The key to remember is get FRESH line that has been stored properly and hasn’t broken down. Buy from a retailer that sells a lot of line and not someone who has old stuff that may have begun to deteriorate. I also can’t emphasize enough the importance of sticking to brands that you have …

Bass fishing boat buying considerations and tips

It’s boat show season and a great time to shop for a boat. It doesn’t matter what your price range is, whether you're looking for your first boat, a replacement boat or even a used boat, visiting these shows where multiple dealers are on hand is a great time and place to research what’s available. For example, you can learn a lot about pricing by seeing different models like Nitro, Ranger and Triton boats sitting side by side where you can compare features. But here’s a piece of advice – do a little homework on the internet before hitting the shows. …

Dispelling cold weather water myths - part 1

It’s wintertime here in Michigan, and I’ve been very busy preparing for next season. I’m gathering up my new equipment, jerseys and tackle. And with winter's cold weather comes ice fishing season for us here in the North. I have a private pond behind my house where I do a lot of lure testing. It’s a great laboratory because the water is clear, and I can watch how bass react to baits and new techniques. The pond is starting to freeze, which means I’ll get the opportunity to get on the ice and do some hard-water fishing in the coming days. …

Tough conditions? Deal with it

I have to admit I have the jitters as I compile this blog prior to the start of the Bassmaster Elite on Cherokee Lake. Although this is the start of my 27th season, the pre-tournament jitters are always the same. Especially now. We can usually get those jitters out of the way at the Bassmaster Classic, but this year we’re kicking off the season before the Classic. Every man in this field knows the importance of a good start to the season, and the tournament here on Cherokee is really going to make us step it up a notch. That’s because …

VanDam calls Cherokee Lake a ‘stress sandwich’

A cold 50-degree drizzle couldn’t chill Kevin VanDam’s attitude as he launched for the final day of practice at the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament at Cherokee Lake in East Tennessee, but stress levels are heating up like a bowl of white sausage gravy in the foggy East Tennessee air. For starters, this is the first Bassmaster Elite Series event of the 2017 season. Naturally, nobody wants to dig himself a hole capable of burying the season’s goodness right out of the gates. Secondly, the weather here has been like a roller coaster ride you might find 30 minutes from the boat …

Mental toughness separates winners and losers

We have an epic Super Bowl coming this weekend that pits two great teams – the best offense against the best defense in the NFL. I really expect a great game, but as always, one team will persevere, and it will be the one that wins the mental battle. I point this out because the 2017 Bassmaster Elite Series kicks off next week on Cherokee Lake in Tennessee pitting dozens of great fishermen against each other. At stake in the season-long battle are the coveted Toyota Bassmaster Angler of Year title and a 2018 Bassmaster Classic invitation. And like the Super …

Paper maps and technology give anglers an edge

There’s no question that today’s electronics and GPS mapping programs are good. I mean, real good. However, there are other tools that belong in anglers’ fish-finding strategies. Like, I still use paper maps and utilize satellite imagery even when I’m on the water. In my mind, it’s important to use every mapping tool available to me. I know some anglers may think paper maps are antiquated and seemingly useless when they have detailed maps on their graph screens. But that’s not the case. They remain critical to my studies because they give me a broader overview of what a system has …
