Fifty anglers, nearly 600 bass and $1.2 million in prize money made the 37th Bassmaster Classic a reality, but they could not define it. As usual, the greatest stage in bass fishing brought forth another host of memories.

In the prior 36 years of BASS history, no angler has ever won the Bassmaster Classic in his home state. Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala. faced that hurdle today at Alabama’s Lay Lake. There was another hurdle too: Kevin VanDam, maybe the most dominant angler in the history of the sport, was the leader.

It’s been in Boyd Duckett’s mind to join the BASSMASTER Elite Series Tour for some time and this was to be the year he pulled the trigger. The 46-year old Demopolis, Ala., angler became the eighth Bassmaster Classic rookie to take the title, putting together a monster third and final day (17 pounds, 13 ounces) of competition to best Skeet Reese and Kevin VanDam, two of the most accomplished anglers in the Elite Series.

About a 100 fans braved 37-degree temperatures, lining the dock — the chilly metal bleachers had few takers — as competitors splashed their boats for bass fishing’s biggest event. Media and anglers alike gingerly negotiated the frosty staging dock while waiting for the 7 a.m. blast-off.
