Gutierrez Stretches His Advantage To 11 Pounds

A lot of Bassmaster Elite Series anglers have anointed California’s Clear Lake the new bass-fishing capital of the world. If that’s the case, then Greg Gutierrez has served two terms as king, president, prime minister, or whatever title is bestowed upon the holder of the highest office in the realm.

The diminutive firefighter from neighboring Red Bluff caught another giant bag – a pound more than on day 1 – to lead for the second straight day. If he stays on his current pace, he’ll obliterate the BASS 4-day weight record by nearly 18 pounds.

Californians Gutierrez, Monroe Set Fast Pace On Day 1, Clear Lake

Greg Gutierrez, one of the smallest anglers on the Bassmaster Elite Series, caught the biggest bag today at Clear Lake. The 5-foot-3 full-time firefighter hauled in 32-13 to take the day-1 lead in what could become a record-breaking tournament as thousands of big fish have moved into the shallows and appear poised to lock onto spawning beds.

He has a 4-ounce lead over fellow Californian Ish Monroe, who’s 2nd with 32-09. He predicted 9 days ago that Preston Clark’s 4-day record of 115-15 would be broken at this event.

Anglers expecting to catch them in bunches before Shootout’s first day

LAKEPORT, Calif. — With his hands stuffed into his pockets to hold off the 31-degree morning air, angler Lee Bailey stood on his boat minutes before take-off and recalled the rich week of practice he enjoyed on Clear Lake.

“You can catch them doing anything you want,” Bailey said. His co-angler caught his two best fish ever, including one over 8 pounds. “He had over 22 pounds just playing around,” Bailey said.

That productivity is why Bailey predicted that anglers would need to average 25-pound bags to make the final-day cut in the third event in the Bassmaster Elite Series, the Golden State Shootout, which began Thursday morning.

Lintner looks to repeat

It’s been two years since BASS has been to Clear Lake, and there are quite a few anglers who are anxious to get back. The last go-around was the Western OPEN in the middle of October 2005, and the weights were heavy, but not overly impressive. There were plenty of familiar Californians entered: Skeet Reese, Ish Monroe, Byron Velvick and Fred Roumbanis. James Overstreet
Jared Lintner holds up his seventh place fish on Sunday at the Duel in the Delta. He hopes for even more success this week on Clear Lake.

Also entered was a 22-year-old mustache-wearing milkman who hadn’t quite made his name with BASS. It took 49 pounds, 15 ounces for Jared Lintner to best the field, and it launched a career that is now in full bloom.

Martens closes out brilliant week on the Delta for first career victory

Aaron Martens was standing backstage, sunburned and shellshocked, cradling his first-ever Bassmaster Elite Series trophy in his arms, answering reporters’ questions about what was working for him this week.

Martens Will Take 3-Pound Advantage Into Final Day

Aaron Martens’ bag on day 3 of the California Delta Bassmaster Elite Series wasn’t nearly as impressive as the one he caught the day before. Still, his 19-02 stringer moved him up the leaderboard for the second straight day ? this time to the top.

The Next Big Thing is on fire

Coming to the California Delta for the second stop of the 2007 Elite Series, it was almost a pre-determined fact that the winner would have to have over 100 pounds…once again, back the truck up because conditions changed. Actually, change isn’t really the right descriptor to use as really the conditions aren’t too much different than what the 108 Elite Series anglers experienced during practice…save one thing – the wind.http://www.basszone.com/2007eliteseries/thedelta/day2/story.htm

Tyler On Top, day 1, Delta

A guy who’s caught lots of bruisers on the California Delta and a rookie who’s making this tour-pro thing look easy got big bites on day 1 of the second stop on the Bassmaster Elite Series. They led the field on a day when the massive maze of channels in the Central Valley was still staggering from the vicious winds that pounded it the day before.

Elite Pros Ready for the Delta

Stockton, CA – The California Delta is truly one of God’s gifts to us mere mortals. Located just east of the San Francisco Bay is a part of California that more closely resembles the Louisiana Delta than anything you might expect to see out west. It’s here, where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers meet before ultimately dumping into the Pacific Ocean via the San Francisco Bay, that nearly 700 square miles of winding canals and waterways create some of the best bass fishing waters in the country…if not the world.

VANDAM NUMBER ONE AFTER LAKE AMISTAD

Kevin VanDam will not give up the number one position. The Michigan pro has held the top spot for five months. Coming of a great performance in the Classic and a solid 5th place finish at Lake Amistad, KVD isn’t going anywhere in the QPT Poll.

VanDam received 274 out of a possible 300 points.
