It’s All In The Lure day 1 Clarks Hill Lake

Casey Ashley, who grew up on Clarks Hill and is leading the tournament with 22-6, said he’s not doing anything special with his technique, and gave up the skinny on his style without any reservations. Ashley said he’s throwing a jig in the shallow water on points and he’s covering a lot of water.

“I’ve seen a lot of guys fishing points, but they’re not throwing what I’m throwing,” Ashley said, putting the emphasis on his lure. “I can’t tell you the difference just yet.”

But there may be more to Ashley’s edge than just a lure. He has had a nice start to his rookie season on the Elite Series — he’s second in the Rookie of the Year standings behind Derek Remitz — and was a favorite coming in because of his local edge.

Rankings, Rookies, AOY Race Top Watch List

Anglers launch this morning for day 1 of the Clarks Hill Bassmaster Elite Series near Augusta, Georgia. They face a lake, and a situation, that poses a particular problem for some.

An unusually warm early weather pattern was followed by a severe downturn in temperature. That affected the spawn and pushed a number of fish back from their beds. Then, over last weekend, a massive and violent front moved through the eastern half of the U.S.

Things have settled out now, and the Clarks Hill field has fairly stable weather to look forward to after today. Still, the bite is squirrelly. The fish are scattered and the famous Clarks Hill schools haven’t formed up yet.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic Leaderboard

Keying on a special 50-yard long underwater point near a channel swing with deep-diving crankbaits, Terry Scroggins and partner Chris Daves led Scroggins’ team to a come-from-behind victory in the Toyota Texas Bass Classic, with a final three day total of 244 pounds, 12 ounces. The two pros, neither of whom had had much previous experience on the famous big bass impoundment, had found the spot earlier in the week, and alternated through it with their teammates, James Niggemeyer and Frank Ippoliti. It was the same spot where Niggemeyer and Ippolitti boated more than 40 pounds of fish yesterday

Jones’ Team Extends Advantage To 15 Pounds

Alton Jones’ team has proven over the first 2 days of the Toyota Texas Bass Classic that they can catch quality fish at Lake Fork when it’s cloudy and windy. If they can do it for 1 more day under conditions that are expected to be sunny and breezy, they stand a good chance to win the first-of-its-kind, Professional Anglers Association-sanctioned event.

They caught 58-12 today for a 2-day total of 140-12, which gave them a 15-pound lead as the 40-team field was cut to the Top 5. Their haul today was more than 23 pounds lighter than on day 1, but it was still among the best that could be managed on a day that featured a constant 25-mph north wind that gusted to 35 at times.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic underway

Winds that blew a steady 15 mph out of the east (and gusted to 25 at times) made it tough to fish unprotected, offshore areas, but some of the leaders still managed to catch some good fish away from the bank. It’s predicted to blow from the opposite direction tomorrow, so teams whose best water was unfishable today might fare better, and those that made hay on day 1 might find the going tougher.

Prespawn: The Final Move

Tournament tactics you can use
By Craig Lamb — Bassmaster.com Editor

Its common bass fishing knowledge that a lake’s entire population of largemouth do not assault the shallows to spawn in one great wave. Instead, the population makes the trek in staggered steps according to changing environmental conditions. Even so, one big move of monster females and their largemouth mates typically punctuate a springtime spawn.

Understanding how all the chips fall into place for that magical move is key to scoring huge catches and making lasting memories of a storybook prespawn-to-spawn springtime fishing trip.

Alabama’s Steve Kennedy Wins Bassmaster Elite Series “Golden State Shootout”; Shatters Bass Record

LAKEPORT, Calif. — In a record-setting performance on the Bassmaster Elite Series circuit, Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., bested Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., by more than five pounds at the “Golden State Shootout presented by Evan Williams Bourbon” on California’s Clear Lake.

The BASS record for the heaviest four-day catch had stood for just less than one year before the 37 year-old Kennedy demolished it after catching 122 pounds, 14 ounces of bass for his four-day total. Preston Clark of Palatka, Fla., set the weight record in April of 2006 at an Elite Series event on South Carolina’s Santee Cooper Reservoir.
